XML Schema include Element

XML Schema Reference Complete XML Schema Reference

Definition and Usage

The include element is used to add multiple schemas with the same target namespace to a document.

Element Information

  • Parent elements: schema

Syntax

<include
id=ID
schemaLocation=anyURI
any attributes
>

(annotation?)

</include>

(The ? sign declares that the element can occur zero or one time inside the include element)

Attribute Description
id Optional. Specifies a unique ID for the element
schemaLocation Required. Specifies the URI to the schema to include in the target namespace of the containing schema
any attributes Optional. Specifies any other attributes with non-schema namespace

Example 1

With included schemas, the included files must all reference the same target namespace. If the schema target namespace don't match, the include won't work:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"
targetNamespace="http://www.w3schools.com/schema">

<xs:include schemaLocation="http://www.w3schools.com/schema/customer.xsd"/>
<xs:include schemaLocation="http://www.w3schools.com/schema/company.xsd"/>
